Point ID Numbering (1)

In creating the Geographic Coordinate Data Base (GCDB) the first major piece of knowledge needed is the unique point identifier (ID) for each corner. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) data standard for the rectangular survey system is GCDB-ID’s. GCDB-ID’s were first created by William Ball Jr., Civil Engineer at the Denver Service Center in cooperation and collaboration with BLM, Cadastral Survey.

They have evolved from there into GCDB-ID’s. These ID’s are an intelligent ID. They tell the user and calculation programs the type of corner, section corner, 1/4 section corner and so on. They also tell which section or sections the corner is located.

GCDB-ID’s scheme is easy to learn. You just have to remember a few simple rules. In this exercise, you will learn these rules and be able to assign these point identifiers.
